November 30th, 2008

We hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving. We did! Our families celebrated the holiday in different parts of Florida, enjoying the warmer weather and a break from farming.

Bountiful Blessings Farm located in Williamsport, TN will be providing carrots, butternut squash and dill this week.
We will be offering carrots from two growers:
Bountiful Blessings carrots: no greens, smaller size, sold by the pound (we think around 10 to the pound)
Hershberger carrots: with greens, larger size, sold by the bunch (3 or 4)
Both are very delicious!

A couple of great gift ideas for the holidays:

Earthwind Botanicals is back this week, offering a wonderful variety of handmade, all natural soaps.

The exciting news from Bountiful Blessings is that for December 17th,our next scheduled delivery, we will be offering their strawberry, blueberry and raspberry syrup. We have had their delicious syrup in the past and anxiously await their arrival in two weeks.

Please go to the website, www.freshharvest.locallygrown.net and place your order on the “Market” page.

When you place your order, please make sure you get an email confirmation. If you do not receive a confirmation, it could be that your order did not go through. Please email us if you have any questions.

Thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

November 16th, 2008

This will be the last delivery before Thanksgiving. At this point, we will continue to make deliveries after Thanksgiving and into the holidays, but will adjust to an every other week schedule. This will allow more time for the slow-growing winter crops to replenish themselves before the next harvest. The offerings will stay consistent, although we may have a few surprises. Thank you for being patient with us as we figure out our winter schedule.

I’m sure you have found the vegetables have a good shelf life. You may be able to get away with ordering extra to bring locally grown goodness to your Thanksgiving table. Certainly the turnips and sweet potatoes keep well, as well as the beets and carrots if you remove their tops and keep them in a plastic bag in your refrigerator. The kale and turnip greens are able to be chopped up and frozen to then be used later in a recipe.

Thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
November 9th, 2008

Good Evening!
It has been a productive week of Fall chores. John is making progress on putting up his hoophouses on his new farm, and Tally got her garlic planted to be harvested next June.
It is skim vegetable offerings this week. We should have a bit more variety in the next week or two. I was hoping the brussel sprouts would be in by now, but they are still just tiny buds on the stalk. However, the next round of red and golden beets are coming along nicely.
Earthwind Botanicals has plenty to offer this week. Lots of good gift ideas for the upcoming holidays. Christmas decorations are up already! Did I miss something?
Thanks you so much for your support. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
November 2nd, 2008

This is such an exciting and important week for our country. Harvesting your food will be a welcome distraction!

Whatever happens, we at Fresh Harvest appreciate your participation in this strong, positive community that supports local agriculture and business. Together, we exemplify the possibilities that can lead this ccountry in a more sustainable direction.

We have decided that we will continue until the week before Thanksgiving. This means our last delivery date will be November 19th. Some of the crops we were hoping would be available this Fall and into the winter have not produced as we hoped, so therefore we have less to offer you. Please enjoy the delicious fresh greens the next few weeks.

Again, we appreciate you support, and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

October 26th, 2008

What a beautiful Fall day it was today! We were harvesting crops all day that we expect to lose in the next few nights of freezing weather. It will be the end of the peppers, basil, eggplant and okra. Some crops, like the kale, we know will be fine. Others, like the salad mix, arugula, and chard, may get some frost bite. We’ll see what happens!

To celebrate the end of pepper season, we are offering a pepper special – colorful peppers for $2.00 a pound and green bell peppers for $1.00 a pound (that’s about 3 or 4 peppers). You can freeze them, or make that stuffed pepper recipe you’ve been meaning to all summer!

This week, Twin Fork Farm Artisan Bread is back, as well as some new offerings – great gift ideas! – from Earthwind Botanicals

Also, please note that John’s new email and address for sending deposits to is on the Market page.

Thanks so much for your support. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

October 19th, 2008

Last night we had the first bit of frost. It was a surprise, and I was a little worried about the very
cold sensitive plants, such as the basil and zinnias. The basil has a few blackened leaves, but otherwise all crops weathered the first hint of what is to come. The basil, peppers, and flowers will be the first crops to go. However, the kale, beets and other greens are amazingly resilient into the freezing months, especially with the help of row cover fabric.

This week is our last week at the Franklin Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. It has been nice seeing some of our Wednesday customers there!

Kristy from Earthwind Botanicals is back this week. Make sure to check out her “Pounds O’ Soap” bags – they are a great deal and make wonderful gifts (and are also fun to buy for yourself – I speak from experience!)

Please go to our website, www.freshharvest.locallygrown.net, and place your order on the Market page.

The leaves are changing and it is going to be a beautiful Fall. Hope everybody is hanging in there. We appreciate your continued support.

We have a nice selection of produce and flowers available this week, with some new items.

We have noticed that many of you are bringing your own cloth bag to pick up and transfering your order into your own reusable bag. This is a great idea, and we do reuse the brown paper bags. We do try to reuse both the paper and plastic bags as much as possible. Thanks for helping us cut down on waste!

Please go to our website, www.freshharvest.locallygrown.net and place your order on the Market page.

Thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

October 5th, 2008

The cool weather is lovely, but it has been over a month with no rain (we farmers always are complaining about something!). Hopefully this week we will get some. It will help soften the dirt for John, who is trying to break new ground at his new farm, and help germinate the winter cover crop of oats and vetch at Tally’s.

We will continue to have new crops for you in the coming month. Most of our offerings will stay the same, and we have beets, brussell sprouts, and perhaps cauliflowers and carrots still to come in.

This week we are offering Earthwind Botanicals aromatherapy products. These are wonderfully smelling soaps, room sprays and body oils. Earthwind Botanicals is a local, cottage industry that uses all natural, high quality ingredients. Once you try these products, it is hard to go back!

Please go to our website, www.freshharvest.locallygrown.net and place your order on the Market page.

Thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

Happy Fall, Everybody!

We have two great things happening this week!
The Wiedigers will be back this week, offering their free-range, pasture raised whole chicken. When you place your order this week, you can pick it up with your vegetables this Wednesday, October 1st. We have really enjoyed working with Paul and Alison Wiediger this season, and are glad to offer their exceptional product to you! This will be the last chicken order of the year. The chickens are $3.49 a pound, and most chickens are 3 – 4 pounds, although they will have some larger birds available for those of you that would like a roaster.

Twin Fork Farm Artisan Bread is offering a 30% off special this week. If you haven’t yet tried David Tannen’s wood fired, European-style bread – or if you haven’t had it for awhile – now is a great opportunity. David has really been perfecting his art form!

It’s supposed to be cool on Wednesday! How lovely!

Please go to our website, www.freshharvest.locallygrown.net and place your order on the Market page.

Thanks so much for your support, and we look forward to seeing you!
